The United Arab Emirates welcomed the new year in Dubai with a mesmerizing display of lights, fireworks, and music from the world's tallest building, the iconic Burj Khalifa. The light shows paid tribute to front-line health workers amid the coronavirus pandemic and displayed words of hope for 2021. The UAE has imposed restrictions to slow the spread of COVID-19 on New Year’s Eve, including limiting social gatherings to 30 and under, and masks must be worn.

Auckland, New Zealand was one of the first places in the world to ring in 2021, with a dazzling firework display and a light show from its iconic Sky Tower and harbor. Revelers on the waterfront watched the five-minute show with brightly colored fireworks and laser lighting shooting into the night sky over the city's harbor. While many countries restricted gatherings and canceled their traditional New Year celebrations due to the coronavirus pandemic, Auckland's residents were able to ring in the new year to watch the show in person.
Many cities on the island of Taiwan are preventing public attendance at firework displays, but in the capital of Taipei, the city government is allowing in-person attendance to its New Year's events, as well as broadcasting them live - including fireworks set off from the outside of the iconic Taipei 101, once the world's tallest building.
